Brian S. Wesbury, Chief Econ.,1st Trust Advisors
Recession, Or Not?

Stalwart financial firms have failed or written down billions of dollars in losses as leverage continues to unwind. Home prices are falling as residential construction has collapsed. Dire warnings of recession fill the headlines of business news, and pessimism is rampant. Yet, the US economy continues to grow. Gross domestic product has not turned negative, the unemployment rate remains low, wages are rising, consumer spending is still expanding, and exports are booming. What should we believe - the fearful forecasts, or the optimism of one of the nations' best forecasters - Brian Wesbury. Come hear why Wesbury still thinks the economy is resilient and investors who remain steadfastly optimistic will reap large rewards.

Brian Wesbury is Chief Economist at First Trust Advisors L.P., a financial services firm based in Lisle, Illinois and serves on the Board of Advisors to First Trust Capital Partners, an affiliated private-equity firm. The Wall Street Journal ranked Mr.Wesbury the nation's #1 U.S. economic forecaster in 2001 and USA Today ranked him as one of the nation's top 10 forecasters in 2004. Mr. Wesbury writes frequently for the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal and is the Economics Editor of "The American Spectator." In 2007, he was named a CNBC Contributor. Mr. Wesbury is a member of the Academic Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and is also an adjunct professor of economics at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. Additionally, he sits on the Board of Managers of Three-Sixty Advisory Group, a Pasadena, California based consulting and private-equity firm. Mr. Wesbury began his career in 1982 at the Harris Bank in Chicago. Former positions include Vice President and Economist for the Chicago Corporation and Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for Griffin, Kubik, Stephens, & Thompson. In 1995 and 1996, he served as Chief Economist for the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress. Mr. Wesbury received an M.B.A. from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Montana. McGraw- Hill published his first book, The New Era of Wealth, in October 1999. He is currently working on a new book, scheduled to be published in 2008 by John Wiley & Sons.

Barry Alvarez

A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY TO BRING GUESTS AND CLIENTS!

Please join us on Wednesday, March 12, as Barry Alvarez, from the University of Wisconsin, speaks to our society.

Each person in attendance will receive a signed copy of Alvarez's book. Only those who RSVP will receive a copy of the book. Please RSVP early as there is a limited supply of books.

Barry Alvarez is now in his fourth year as Director of Athletics at the University of Wisconsin and second without the additional title of head football coach. Alvarez served as A.D. and football coach from 2004-05.

Alvarez's first year as Director of Athletics (without the football duties) was a memorable one as Wisconsin won four national titles (men's cross country, men's and women's hockey, and women's lightweight rowing) during the 2005-06 athletic campaign. Badger student-athletes then showed their capabilities off the field of play during the fall of 2006 when they registered the highest cumulative grade-point average for a fall term in department history.

The Badgers followed up those successes by winning two more national titles (women's hockey and men's indoor track and field) in 2006-07.

Alvarez guided Wisconsin's football fortunes for 16 seasons (1990-2005). He has been at the forefront of the revival of the Badger athletic program during his entire tenure in Madison.  He piloted Wisconsin to three Big Ten and Rose Bowl titles (including back-to-back in 1998-99) en route to becoming the winningest football coach in school history (118-73-4 record).

Alvarez was just the 10th coach in Big Ten history to win 100 games at one conference institution.  His 8-3 (.727) record in bowl games with the Badgers is the best in college football history (among coaches with at least 11 bowl appearances).  The 2004 AFCA Region 3 Coach of the Year, he also was the 1993 national coach of the year, a two-time (1993 and 1998) Big Ten coach of the year and a finalist for ESPN's coach of the decade (1990s) honor.

Alvarez is a 1969 graduate of the University of Nebraska, where he played linebacker and went on to earn his master's degree. He received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater in 2003. Alvarez and his wife, Cindy, are co-campaign chairs in the effort to bring a Gilda's Club (a free support center for families dealing with cancer) to Madison. In addition, Alvarez serves on the Board of Directors of the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer).

Price Specific to this Special Event: $25 Members, $30 Non-Members, $15 Students. Payable at the door.

Steve Hoye
Portfolios Optimization with Failure-Prone Projects

Steve Hoye has over 26 years of experience in the Oil and Gas industry, first as a geophysicist, and later as Asset Team Manager and Team Leader for a multinational energy company.  He has extensive computer programming experience and over 10 years of experience forecasting the effects of uncertainty and risk on the financial results of a wide range of project types from oil and gas drilling portfolios to new product development and sales.  Steve earned an MBA from the University of Denver's Daniels College of Business in 1997, and holds a BS in Geophysics from Purdue University with a mathematics emphasis.  He earned the designation 'Chartered Financial Analyst' from the CFA Institute in 2006.

Steve developed and teaches the Advanced Crystal Ball for Oil & Gas course.  He also teaches the following courses for Decisioneering:

Introduction to Crystal Ball, Advanced Crystal Ball, Introduction to Real Options, and Spreadsheet Modeling Techniques for Business: Best Practices.  Steve consults with companies worldwide on the use of stochastic modeling in financial analysis and business decision making.

"Portfolios Optimization with Failure-Prone Projects: An Analysis of Risk and Real Options and Their Contribution to Efficient Capital Allocation"

Failure-prone projects are characterized by high potential returns with a significant risk of loss due to technical constraints, competitive pressures, failure to reach market in time, or other scenarios where the product's future value will not payout the costs of development.

Examples include new product development in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, drilling for oil and gas, and high-tech consumer product launches.

The author demonstrates the use of Monte Carlo Simulation in the evaluation of failure prone projects under conditions of uncertainty, simulating a discounted cash flow analysis with multiple sources of uncertainty.  A portfolio with multiple projects is then simulated and efficient combinations of projects are defined that minimize portfolio risk for a given required level of return using a sophisticated portfolio optimization, which is demonstrated.  These resulting portfolios are shown to lie on the efficient frontier.

The properties of the efficient frontier are then related to various aspects of the underlying projects in the portfolio, including: systematic (e.g. price) versus unsystematic (failure) risks,  availability of strategic flexibility to abandon or expand certain, projects: real options

Finally, appropriate measures of risk are discussed for portfolio optimization as well as the sensitivity of the process to some of the numerical parameters that are used.

Vitaliy Katsenelson
Active Value Investing: Making Money in Range Bond Markets

One of the most significant challenges facing today's active investor is how to make money during times when markets are going nowhere.  Market experts predict whether the stock market will go up or down, but the reality is that it goes nowhere over 50% of the time.  There are many books written on investment strategy in bull markets, but there is little guidance on how to invest in range bound markets.

In Active Value Investing, author and respected investment portfolio manager Vitaliy Katsenelson makes a convincing case for range-bound market conditions and offers readers a practical strategy for proactive investing that improves profits.  This guide provides investors with the know-how to modify the traditional, fundamentally driven strategies that they have become so accustomed to using in bull markets, so that they can work in range bound markets.  Mr. Katsenelson will also introduce you to the Quality, Valuation, and Growth (QVG) framework, which lies at the core of this approach.

Range-bound markets may be difficult to invest in, but with Active Value Investing as your guide, you will quickly learn how to squeeze real profits out of a difficult market so please plan on attending this program presented by Vitaliy Katsenelson on December 3rd.

Vitaliy Katsenelson, CFA (Denver, Co) has been involved with the investment industry since 1994.  He is a portfolio manager with Investment Management Associates.  Mr. Katsenelson is a member of the CFA Institute, has served on the board of CFA Society of Colorado and is also on the board of Retirement Investment Institute.

John Gurda
History of Milwaukee

"THE MAKING OF MILWAUKEE"

Milwaukee was known as "good land" to native Americans, a place of abundant natural resources. It became, over the decades, a major Great Lakes port, a stronghold of industry, a capital of ethnic diversity, a model of good government, and one of the most livable large cities in America. "The Making of Milwaukee" is a fast-paced PowerPoint program that captures the full sweep of the community's history, from its wilderness past to the complex patterns of the 21st century.

BIOGRAPHY

John Gurda is a Milwaukee-born writer and historian who has been studying his hometown since 1972. He is the author of eighteen books, including histories of Milwaukee-area neighborhoods, churches, and industries. The Making of Milwaukee is Gurda's most ambitious effort. With 450 pages, more than 500 illustrations, and a cast of thousands, it is the first feature-length history of the community published since 1948. Milwaukee Public Television produced a highly acclaimed documentary series based on the book in 2006.

In addition to his work as an author, Gurda is a lecturer, tour guide, and local history columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He holds a B.A. in English from Boston College and an M.A. in Cultural Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Gurda is an eight-time winner of the Wisconsin Historical Society's Award of Merit.
