Membership Requirements

CFA Society of Milwaukee Membership Types and Requirements

The process for joining the CFA Society of Milwaukee starts at the national society level, the CFA Institute.  This process is separate from enrollment in the CFA Program.  The following link to the CFA Institute website provides an explanation of the application process, as well as the online tools you need to get started:

The CFA Society of Milwaukee has two membership levels, regular and affiliate.  The specific requirements to be met for each level are as follows:

 1.  Regular Membership:

To qualify as a regular member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Milwaukee, you must meet all of the following criteria:

·         Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or have equivalent education or work experience.

·         Pass Level 1 of the CFA exam or other such appropriate examination as approved by the Board of Governors, or pass the self-administered Standards of Practice Exam.

·         Have 48 months of acceptable professional work experience in the investment decision-making process.

·         Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement, a Professional Conduct Statement, and any additional documentation requested by the CFA Institute.

2.  Affiliate Membership:

Affiliate membership requirements vary by local society, and to qualify as an affiliate member of the CFA Society of Milwaukee, you must meet all of the following criteria:

·         Pass Level 1 of the CFA exam or other such appropriate examination as approved by the Board of Governors, or pass the self-administered Standards of Practice Exam.

·         Have 12 months of acceptable professional work experience in the investment decision-making process.

·         Agree to adhere to and sign the Member's Agreement and a Professional Conduct Statement

Acceptable Professional Work Experience

As part of the application process, you will need to provide a detailed narrative of your work experience for review by the national society.  The CFA Institute will make the determination if it qualifies as acceptable professional experience in the investment decision-making process.  The experience may be accumulated from current and/or past positions.  The following link provides you with additional detail on qualifying activities, as well as sample job titles and work experience descriptions.

Sponsor Requirements

You will also need to provide statements from two sponsors with your application.  The sponsors need to be a regular member of the CFA Institute (also of the CFA Society of Milwaukee), and your supervisor.  The supervisor requirement is waived if the applicant is the principal of the firm, a student, retired, self-employed, unemployed, or if providing a supervisor sponsor places the applicant in a difficult professional position.  In that case, both sponsors need to be regular members of the CFA Institute (although only one also needs to be a member of the CFA Society of Milwaukee).

The CFA Society of Milwaukee can provide you with a sponsor if necessary.  Please contact Ryan Moran if you are in need of a sponsor.
